Flashback: Day Fourteen - Driving South As Best We Can

Day 14: Wednesdsay, October 21

• We woke to the sounds of insane wind still, with shutters banging and trees creaking, so we ate our breakfast quickly and drove out of town due south. The goal was to make it as far south of Inverness as possible and choose at that time whether we would have time to make it to the Isle of Skye and back or to just continue south.

• A quick stop on the way at the Glenmorangie Distillery – no time for a tour, but they did do a tasting for us, and interestingly, they have very limited line, with a base 10 year whisky and then others that are finished for 2 years in specific casks to lend flavor. Lasanta is my favorite, but nothing I can't live without, so off we went.

• Stopped at Tain Pottery and watched them painting thein unglazed masterpieces. Amazing to see them work and the ceramics were beautiful. Stopped also at another potter down the road, but it was more of an all-in-one kind of place, with pottery, furniture, handbags, fabric, food. It was like a Scottish IKEA in the middle of nowhere. Time to move on.

• We had to stop for all things Pict so we followed the signs to Nigg, where a curious and ancient church held the Nigg stone, a carved Pictish tablet from around 700 AD. Breathtaking to behold.

Also, the churchyard had the Cholera Stone so not to worry...your cholera woes are taken care of.

• Stopped at a little place called the Storehouse for lunch, with great food and some local organic beer...Black Isle Porter. Excellent stuff and I doubt I'll find it here, but I'm gonna try. :)

• We passed through Inverness, and on down Loch Ness. Saw Ness at sunset which was stunning, but other than that and a few small viewpoints it was mostly a long day of driving. We pulled into Fort William just after dark and found the first guest house with a vacancy to rest for the night.
