Flashback: Day Fifteen - Pulling Into Oban

Day 15: Thursday, October 22

• Grabbed breakfast at the guest house in Fort William, but when we went to check out, their machine wasn't taking any of our cards so I had to hoof it into town and hit the ATM at Morrisons. At least the brisk morning walk was nice.

• We realized that Skye wasn't going to happen without some sort of mad rush so we headed south to Oban, taking the long way around Loch Leven. Saw some AMAZING shots of the Glencoe area (as featured in Braveheart, Highlander and pretty much any film that takes place in the Scottish highlands).

• Stopped at an old Episcopalian church on the banks of the loch and browsed the headstones. So much history there, but nary a Gilchrist to be found.

• Took a break at a roadside shop outside Stalker Castle. Didn't get to see the castle itself since it's on the water, but it quite impressive from the shore. Python fans may know it as the Castle AAAAARGH from Holy Grail.

• Stopped at Dunstaffnage Castle, an awe-inspiring fortress from 1275 and my favorite castle from the trip. It was a true representation of what a castle is in my head, with an open keep, giant outer walls, etc. Straight out of my Dungeons and Dragons geek imagination. There was a gorgeous chapel on the grounds exterior as well and we took our time enjoying the sights.

• We then made our way into Oban and stopped on George Street at the St Anne Guest House. Affordable, but no breakfast this time. Walked into downtown Oban, into a gallery of a photographer whose work we saw at the Stalker Castle shop. Ended up stopping and eating at the Oban Steakhouse, which felt like a large American chain. Instanely bad nachos (unsurprisingly) but goot fish and chips. Also had a John Smith’s Ale, a Guinness and a Bunnahabhain 18 year single malt (magnificent).
