Flashback: Day Sixteen - From Seaside to City

Day 16: Friday, October 23

• Checking out of the guest house, with a cup of coffee in the room to start the day. Then we were off exploring Oban, stopping at the Pancake Palace for breakfast (good pancakes with weird syrup, tasty coffee). Autographed pictures of Phil Collins and Bob Hoskins!

• Tasha and Dad went to photo gallery, I went to find payphone and book room in Glasgow. Egg was crusted all over the payphone, which is a bummer since phones are a rare find anyway.

• Oban is tiny and adorable, coastal seaside classic kind of town with board walk and nice long street with shops. Harbor is gorgeous, sight of distant islands amazing.

• Got room sorted, gathered Tasha and Dad, went down to jewelry store so dad could look for a cairngorm and then we hit the Oban chocolate shop.

• Back up from the harbor and on to Oban distillery. No tastings without tour, and time was running short so back to the car and out of town

• Down the road and around Loch Lomond. Spread Mom’s last bit of ashes around the Loch’s edge. The scenery was gorgeous in spite of the grey skies and sudden downpour of rain.

• Passed a large number of deer. It was all beautiful scenery, but rain really started to fall as we made our way toward Glasgow.

• Got to Glasgow’s outer edge, and stopped at gas station to pick up Thomas Guide style map. Proved invaluable, since Glasgow is HUGE and the streets confusing. Found our way to the Craigpark Guest House, got settled.

• Drove into downtown for dinner, found walking square, and people already gathering for Friday night. Settled on Piazza Italia for dinner…Italian wait staff and tremendous food down to the mochaccino and sambuca. Then we marveled at the city lit up at night on the way to the car.

• Back at guest house for evening to research Gilchrist genealogy and look up weird things on the Internet with our spotty Internet connection.
