Flashback: Day Twelve - Neolithic Madness

Day 12: Monday, October 19

• Breakfast at the Hotel – Tasha passed, but it was smoked haddock and eggs for me, smoked kipper for dad. Misunderstanding of the breakfast arrangement, so we knew better what to order for the next morning...in other words, identifying specific items gets you JUST THAT, nothing else. Hence the combo of fish and eggs I suppose.
• Walked into town for shopping. One long street with many side alleys, lots of foot traffic and charming little shops. Pretty perfect placement as far as our hotel was concerned, aside from being right above a pub, which is surprisingly rowdy on a Sunday night.
• Took a quick restroom stop at the hotel, then off to neolithic landmark Maeshowe. Rain and wind picked up, and we were able to make it as far as the entrance, then Dad chose to hang back due to the tight, crouching, 30 foot long entrance. Fascinating construction, massive stones, Norse runic graffiti...truly amazing all around.
• Came out to get Dad and drove on to the Stenness Standing Stones, then the Ring of Brodgar. Both were just awe-inspiring. Tasha and I had to go it alone up to the ring due to the increasing wind and cold, but we took plenty of pictures to share with dad.

• By this point it was QUITE cold and damp, we made our way back to the hotel, but it was too soon for dinner so we walked down the road to Helgi’s pub, which was serving as of 5 pm. LOVELY steak pie and Cullen Skink (a traditional fish chowder), pints of McEwans Ale and lemon berry pudding with cream. Jukebox with Vampire Weekend, Nina Simone and Fleet Foxes, and Dad got TWO true espresso mochas. Again, culinary experiences here are far beyond expectation.
