Skeletal Itinerary

Nothing is truly set in stone and we're still deciding on where to go and what to do, but generally speaking, here is the game plan for those keeping score (see how I extended that metaphor?):

Oct. 7: Plane ride extravaganza, Portland to Minneapolis to Amsterdam to Edinburgh
Oct. 8: Arrive in Edinburgh, go through customs, check in to the Granville Guesthouse (http://www.granvilleguesthouse.com/) and crash
Oct. 9-10: Explore Edinburgh (Royal Mile, pubs, castles, high tea, etc.). On the 10th it's ERIK'S BIRTHDAY and he arrives from Cambridge, staying with us that night.
Oct. 11: Take the train to Aberdeen, enjoy the sights. Once there, rent a car and drive to Lagganvoulin Cottage in Tomintoul, Speyside. Hang out.
Oct. 12-16: Check out the Highlands, including Culloden, Loch Ness, Inverness, Old Course at St. Andrews, the coast, pottery, distilleries, castles, etc. At some point, drive Erik back to Aberdeen from whence he returns to Cambridge
Oct. 17: Drive up to the Thurso area, check in at Greenland Guest House in Castletown
Oct. 18: Catch noon ferry from Scrabster to Stromness, stay somewhere in Orkney
Oct. 19-20: Explore Orkney, check out Skara Brae and other neolithic sites, castles, wool, whisky
Oct. 21: Catch 11 AM ferry back to the mainland, begin drive to Oban
Oct. 22-23: Drive to Oban, stay somewhere in between. Possible explore the Whisky Coast or check out a weird plane crash site
Oct. 24: Drive to Glasgow, explore the city, catch a live show (if lucky...Belle & Sebastian, Twilight Sad, I'm looking in your direction...). Return the car here.
Oct. 25: Catch train to Edinburgh, catch breath. Celebrate Tasha's Birthday!
Oct. 26: Fly out of Edinburgh WAY too early, home the same day.

So, travelling pros...have we missed anything? Advice is MOST welcome.

  1. What a great itinerary! My only suggestion is don't push your self too much! Take time to stop and just enjoy the scenery and snap pictures of everything! Oh, and don't forget to bring me a bottle of Oban back...

Thanks and have a ridiculous amount of fun!! ;-)
